Actian Vector Delivers Double Digit Performance Advantage vs Amazon Redshift and Microsoft SQL Server
PALO ALTO, Calif. – March 1, 2018 – Actian, the hybrid data management, analytics and integration company, today announced that Actian Vector analytics database running on Amazon Web Services (AWS) outperforms Amazon Redshift by as much as 12X in an industry benchmark conducted by McKnight Consulting Group (MCG) Global Services. In a separate MCG benchmark report, Actian Vector performs up to nearly 10X faster than Microsoft SQL Server.
For too long, enterprises seeking the elasticity offered by the cloud have had to compromise on performance and scalability. In addition, many organizations implementing a hybrid approach to data analytics have been forced to utilize disparate solutions for on-premises and the cloud. Now, with the newly announced availability of Actian Vector on AWS, enterprises can harness their data anywhere without having to compromise speed, agility or scale.
In February 2018, MCG conducted two comprehensive tests comparing Actian Vector to Amazon Redshift and Microsoft SQL Server based on the enterprise-representative UC Berkeley AMPLab Big Data Benchmark.
- Actian Vector vs. AWS Redshift – The benchmark test shows that Actian Vector scales on clustered configurations, taking full advantage of cloud and scalability, and outperforming AWS Redshift by as much as 12X, with the performance advantage more pronounced as the complexity and concurrency of the workload increase. The dataset sizes were extended from 1 to 5 and then 10 terabytes of data to simulate real-world Big Data demands. The testing was conducted using comparable hardware configurations on AWS EC2 Instances, deployed into an AWS Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) within the same placement group.
- Actian Vector vs. Microsoft SQL Server– The benchmark test shows that Actian Vector also performs up to nearly 10X faster than SQL Server, handling multiple concurrent users in a superior fashion as compared to MS SQL Server. The dataset sizes were extended from 500 GB to 750 GB and 1 TB of data to simulate real-world demands. The testing was conducted using the same size and class of AWS EC2 Instances.
“Data-driven organizations rely on analytic databases to load, store, and analyze volumes of data at high speed to derive timely insights. This benchmark addresses some fundamental business questions that any organization might encounter and ask,” said William McKnight, President, McKnight Consulting Group. “Actian Vector, through this industry-standard set of scan, join and aggregation queries, demonstrated a significant performance advantage over Amazon Redshift and Microsoft SQL Server. These objective results were driven by the patented Actian X100 vectorized query engine which exploits the parallelism capabilities of modern server hardware.”
Planned for GA release in March 2018, Actian Vector on AWS is a pay-as-you-go SaaS offering with enterprise support. This ground breaking offering bolsters Actian’s strategic shift to the cloud for its analytic database, which started with the release of single-click community editions on AWS Marketplace last year and on Microsoft Azure Marketplace earlier in 2018. Actian’s award winning Vector technology was recently awarded a U.S. Patent in February for its pioneering positional delta trees technology, which enables real-time data updates with zero performance penalty.
