Steve Shine, CEO and President
Steve joined Actian in 2007 as Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales, spearheading the company’s emergence into new markets and honing its global sales processes. Since assuming the role of CEO and President in 2011, Steve has led Actian through sustained organic and acquisition growth to position the company as a leading innovator in big data management and analytics and cloud integration. Prior to Actian, Steve was with Sybase as senior vice president and general manager for EMEA, overseeing all operational, sales, financial and human resources in the region. While at Sybase, he achieved more than $200 million in revenue and managed 500 employees, charting over 50 percent growth in the Business Intelligence market for Sybase. Prior to Sybase, Steve was at Canadian-based Geac Computer Corporation for ten years, helping to successfully turn around two major global divisions for the ERP firm. Steve holds a B.Sc. in Physics from Manchester University and lives in London with his partner and two children.
Steven Springsteel, Chief Financial Officer
As Actian CFO, Steve leads Actian’s financial and administrative organizations including the finance, IT, HR and legal teams to drive the company to a position of global leadership in big data and analytics. Steve brings more than 25 years of experience in operational and financial management with extensive experience in enterprise data solutions. His accomplishments include managing two successful IPOs, multiple mergers and acquisitions, a variety of equity and debt funding activities as well as helping to formulate and implement complex business strategies.
Prior to joining Actian in June 2013, Steve was CFO and COO of U.S. Liquid Robotics Inc. He also served as President and CEO of Chordiant Software (and subsequently as Chairman of its board of directors), CFO at MarkLogic, CFO at Verity Inc., and various financial management positions at Apple Computer, The Santa Cruz Operation and Altos Computers.
In 2008, he was recognized with the Ernst & Young “Entrepreneur of the Year” award for Software in Northern California. Steve holds a B.B.A. from Cleveland State University.
Mike Hoskins, Chief Technology Officer
As CTO, Mike leads the evangelism of Actian’s technology innovations for the Age of Data, looking over the technology horizon to maintain innovation as a core Actian competency. Mike also leads an in-house team focused on incubating new technology innovations. Mike joined Actian through its 2013 acquisition of Pervasive Software, where he was CTO, focused on addressing big data challenges and cloud-based and on-premises data management and integration. Mike received the AITP Austin chapter's 2007 Information Technologist of the Year Award for his leadership in developing DataRush™, a highly parallelized framework to leverage multicore. Mike, a Distinguished and Centennial Alumnus of Ohio’s Bowling Green State University, is a respected technology thinker who speaks worldwide. He participated in the “Open Standards and Cloud Computing” panel at the 2009 Annual Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, the “Scaling the Database in the Cloud” panel at Structure 2010, the “Many Faces of MapReduce - Hadoop and Beyond” panel at Structure Big Data 2011 and delivered the DeployCon keynote in 2012: “The Waking Giant: The Coming Era of Enterprise-Ready PaaS.” Discussion topics include technology success strategies for the Age of Data, applying parallelism to tackle big data analytics, gaining price/performance efficiency in the Hadoop ecosystem, Software as a Service and cloud-based data services. Mark Milani, SVP – Product Engineering
Mark Milani is SVP, Product Engineering at Actian. He leads the ParAccel Big Data Analytics Platform, Action Apps and enterprise database Core Technology Group engineering teams across Actian. Mark joined Actian in 2012 with over 20 years of engineering and leadership experience, having most recently served as SVP of Service Engineering at Oracle, where he led the technology direction and delivery for Oracle’s Cloud Services. In this role, Mark was responsible for developing standard service solutions for Oracle software over cloud architectures and management infrastructure. He also provided engineering solutions to Oracle’s Global Customer Support and Advanced Customer Services.
Prior to heading Service Engineering, Mark led Oracle’s Platform Technologies Engineering and the Worldwide Product Translation Group, where he was responsible for delivering Oracle’s database, middleware, and application product lines across Oracle’s supported platforms. Before Oracle, Mark held a variety of leadership positions developing cross-platform and database solutions at Cross Access, Aion Corporation, and IBM.
Ashish Gupta, CMO and SVP, Business Development
Ashish Gupta joined Actian in 2013, where he is responsible for marketing and business development. Ashish brings more than 21 years of experience in enterprise software companies where he focused on creating go-to-market approaches that scale rapidly and building product portfolio that became category leaders in the industry. Ashish was formerly at Vidyo, where the company grew to be the leading software based video conferencing platform and was named to the coveted Wall Street Journal’s “Next Big Thing” list for 3 years continuously and was selected as a “Tech Innovator” by the World Economic Forum. Previously, Ashish led the Business Development and Strategy, Marketing and Corporate Sales teams for Microsoft Office Division’s Unified Communications Group responsible for introducing the industry leading Microsoft Lync product. Prior to Microsoft, Ashish was VP of Product and Solutions at Alcatel/Genesys Telecommunications and VP of Marketing and Business Development at Telera Inc. (acquired by Alcatel), and management consultant for Braxton/Deloitte Consulting. He also held marketing leadership positions at HP and Covad. He holds an M.B.A. from UCLA and a B.A. in Economics and Computer Science from Grinnell College.
Lance Speck, General Manager, Actian DataCloud Platform
Lance Speck is General Manager of the Actian DataCloud® Platform team, responsible for sales, R&D, services and support for Actian’s data integration, data quality, Business Xchange, and cloud Platform-as-a-Service offerings. Lance spearheads Actian’s strategic leadership position in delivering a secure elastic cloud-based platform that integrates cloud and on-premises applications while providing robust data quality and other data services.. In more than a decade at Pervasive, which was acquired by Actian in April 2013, Lance has served in a variety of senior management roles, most recently as Senior Director of Sales, Marketing and Services for Pervasive Integration Products.
His team is responsible for thought leadership and execution strategy for integration products delivered via direct and indirect channels, including SaaS vendors, ISVs, and BPOs, as well as to the enterprise. These primarily address data management, data quality, and data integration for customers in industries including healthcare, human resources, marketing automation, and logistics.
Lance joined Pervasive Software in 2001 from United Devices, where he was a senior account executive focused on providing grid solutions and distributed computing software and services. Prior to United Devices, Lance worked as an Account Executive at Pervasive including moving to San Jose in 1999 to open an office in Cupertino. Lance worked for Lotus Development Corporation prior to and after the acquisition by IBM.
Lance holds a BA in government from The University of Texas at Austin.
Tom Ulrich, SVP, Global Sales - ParAccel Big Data Analytics Platform
As the SVP of Global Sales, Tom Ulrich is responsible for the field operations and sales execution of Actian's ParAccel Platform business. Tom has over 25 years of direct sales and sales management experience in enterprise software, with a focus on high growth, early stage technology companies.
Before joining Actian, Tom served as VP of North American Sales at ParAccel, a leader in the analytic database market and prior to that served as VP of Sales at GridPoint, a cloud provider of real-time analytics. Tom also brings extensive experience in the Business Intelligence and Data Warehouse industries, including a 10 year career at MicroStrategy. During his tenure at MicroStrategy, Tom was recognized as the #1 worldwide AE, led an "emerging markets" sales team and served in various sales leadership roles, helping the company grow annual revenues from $20m to $500m.
Tom earned an M.B.A. in International Business from George Washington University, where he was the recipient of a business fellowship, and a B.A. in Business from Nazareth College.
Paul McCullugh, Senior Vice President of Sales, Enterprise Databases
Paul McCullugh is responsible for worldwide sales efforts for Actian’s enterprise databases. These products include Ingres - OpenRoad, Versant, and PSQL with thousands of installations around the world. Prior to taking the position in 2013, Paul was Executive Vice President Sales & Marketing of Versant, which was acquired by Actian in December 2012. Paul served as Versant's Vice President of Sales of North America & Asia Pacific during 1999 and 2000. During his 20-year career, he has built a solid track record of success and leadership managing both direct and in-direct sales in commercial and open source software markets, including cloud business models. He rejoined Versant after a very successful six years at Oracle, where he held various sales positions in the Technology division, most recently as Senior Director of Cloud Services. Prior to Oracle, Paul was Senior Director of Sales for Sleepycat Software, an open-source database company. Prior to Sleepycat, he held executive sales positions with several VC-backed start-ups.
Paul holds a BA in Business Administration from Western Washington University.
Jason Leonidas, Vice President, APAC Sales
With more than 20 years of IT solutions sales background, Jason leads Actian’s APAC and Australia/New Zealand sales and operations, including channel partners throughout the region. Jason has held various sales and services leadership positions with Actian since 2006, when he joined the company from Oracle. In his nine years at Oracle, Jason served in a variety of technical and sales roles including Account Director, Applications Sales, and Solution Architect. Previously he was a Senior Consultant with Aspect Computing where he lead a team of developers implementing BI and data warehousing Solutions. Jason has extensive experience in BI and Data warehousing solutions. Jason holds a B.I.S. in Information Technology from Monash University.
David Postle – Vice President of Services, Europe
David is responsible for Actian’s services and solutions business in Europe. Bringing over 20 years of experience building innovative solutions for customers’ complex business problems, David joined Actian in 2007 when they acquired the successful systems development and integration company he co-founded, Luminary Solutions. Prior to joining Actian, David spent four years at CA Technologies in various Europe-wide consulting and pre-sales management roles in the Information Management division. He began his career at Cap Gemini and then spent eight years building another enterprise-focused systems development and integration company, Apertus Systems, that was acquired by CA in 2000.
David holds a B.Sc. Computation degree from Manchester University.
