Introducing Actian Zen Embedded Database for Today’s Data Intensive Next Generation IoT Applications

PALO ALTO, Calif. – June 27, 2017 – Actian, the hybrid data management, analytics and integration company, today announced Actian Zen Embedded database, the premier, multiplatform, embeddable database for developers delivering applications to self-managed, small footprint environments. Actian Zen is uniquely well-suited to meet the needs of software developers and data-driven device manufacturers delivering the next generation of IoT applications.

Actian Zen delivers a modular, nano-footprint solution supporting both SQL and NoSQL access methods. Features such as customizable installation, self-tuning, easy upgrades, seamless backward compatibility, minimal memory requirements and exceptionally low support requirements mean that developers can deliver applications to customers at scale across a wide range of platforms without getting buried by support costs or reliability issues.

Other features continue Actian’s software-focused tradition, including a next-generation client cache reporting engine that enables the offloading of high-volume reporting functions from production systems. An enhanced C++ API simplifies access to the Actian Zen database’s internals and significantly expands the pool of developers capable of building the next business-critical application on Actian Zen.

Applications operating in zero management IT environments have distinctly different database requirements than those seen in the typical enterprise data center. These databases run, sometimes for years, without any intervention and are often embedded in the application with installation and operation fully automated and hidden from the end user. These use cases require extreme database reliability, modularity and scalability throughout the life of the product. The stakes are high for the software vendor since thousands of copies of their applications are in use, often on a global basis, so even a minor increase in customer support issues could quickly swamp a support organization and obliterate profit margins.

“We’ve been working with Actian Zen Embedded database on Raspbian in pre-beta versions for a while and are really pleased with the results,” said Jean-Pierre Clauws, Managing Director, Integrated Quality Networks. “Actian’s Zen Embedded database has a long history of embeddability and durability, which makes it an excellent choice for developers planning applications for the Raspberry Pi platform. With the rise of IoT, we love the direction Actian is taking with this innovative offering.”

“Actian Zen Embedded database has been the choice of leading developers and device manufacturers, enabling them to deliver data-driven applications with rock-solid reliability to millions of users,” said Rohit De Souza, CEO of Actian. “Developers are looking for a database that is modular, scalable and reliable that can handle the additional data demand driven by today’s demanding IoT applications. Together with Actian’s comprehensive cloud, integration and analytics capabilities, we are perfectly positioned to help forward-thinking organizations activate their data across the enterprise — from the device to the cloud and back.”

Actian Zen Embedded database, previously known as PSQL, is immediately available. More information can be found here.

Also available today are beta versions of Actian Zen Embedded database for Raspbian (the Debian-based computer operating system for Raspberry Pi), Microsoft Windows IoT Core and Microsoft NanoServer. Each of these operating systems is expected to be a significant player in the future IoT ecosystem, and Actian Zen’s small footprint – as small as 30MB – and embeddable design makes it an excellent choice for developers. The beta downloads are available to developers today, with GA versions expected later in 2017.
