An own goal for Oracle?

In my blog about the Oracle acquisition of Sun, earlier this week, I predicted that Oracle would mount a sales campaign to move MySQL customers with transactional applications to Oracle. I was amused to receive an invitation from Oracle last night to a webcast titled “Lower Total Cost of Ownership with Oracle: Comparing Oracle to MySQL” You would think that they would have the decency to wait until the deal had actually closed before alienating the MySQL community ;)

No doubt the webcast was scheduled before Monday’s announcement and someone in Oracle’s marketing department will be punished for the own goal today, but it should be interesting to hear how they position this now. Tune in next week for an update.
